OUR STORY
Diminutive Studio is collaborative project between Fashion and Costume designer, James Dii, and Makeup Artist and Photographer, Josiah Cracraft. The two artists were initially drawn to the world of dolls and miniatures as a way to express their creativity and personal visions of beauty in a fully realized way, being able to create entire photography sets in a scaled down way put so many aspects of their skills and talents in a new way allowing for full expression, solely from their point of view.
There are so many beautiful doll sculpts and talented sculptors out there, but none reflected the exact perspective that they wished to use to express their artistic visions. James and Josiah are both people of color living in the United States, and upon doing research for their perfect Ball Jointed Doll, they discovered a large gap in the community for dolls of color as well as a lack of representation of BJD Company owners/sculptors of color.
Not being sculptors, They began working with 3D printing which led them to build a collaborative relationship with a very talented 3D sculptor out of Mexico. After months of communicating back and forth about the design, 3D printing, testing parts and repeating the process, then finally sanding, priming each piece, their first model, was ready to be prototyped.
It was important for them to have their doll manufactured in the US, especially because of the covid-19 pandemic and the supply chain issues that ensued. Because most Ball Jointed Dolls are casted in Asia, the search for a US based company that would take on the job proved to be long, but finally, they discovered a small casting company out of Texas where their doll would be hand casted. Now the fun begins!
